From federal grant award to operational network in 120 days.
A rural community connected before the grant deadline.
At a glance
The challenge
Blanchard, Idaho, like many rural communities, lacked high-speed broadband. Residents and businesses operated with connectivity limitations urban areas had not faced in years. When federal grant funding became available, the clock started immediately: grant requirements mandated operational service within aggressive timelines that traditional deployment approaches could not meet. Missing the deadline meant losing the funding.
Rural fiber presents challenges urban projects do not: longer distances between premises, difficult terrain, limited local contractor availability and permit processes unfamiliar with large-scale infrastructure.
Our approach
BNS Networks compressed the timeline by executing design and construction in overlapping phases. While engineering finalized route designs for later segments, construction crews began work on approved sections. Parallel execution, combined with crews who understood rural deployment, delivered the network ahead of grant deadlines.
Community coordination was essential. Residents needed to understand what was coming, when construction would affect their property, and how to get connected once the network was live.
Outcomes
What the client got
- Fully operational network within 120 days
- Grant compliance requirements fully satisfied
- Underserved community connected to high-speed service
- Foundation established for continued expansion
- Community economic opportunity expanded
